Signals from electronic instru-ments such as guitars, keyboardsand similar sound sources gener-ally have a low level, high im-pedance output, which will notinterface with the low impedancebalanced input found onprofessional sound mixing con-soles. Furthermore these signalscannot be driven up long cablelengths without serious loss oflevel and degradation.

The DI box converts this signal toa more suitable form withoutinterfering with or modifying thesignal at the instrument source,and should provide freedom fromground and power line relatedproblems.

Passive DI boxes have limitedapplications as they will inevita-bly affect the signal source forguitar type applications, and canalso have an insertion loss ofaround 20dB.

The only safe and predictableway to provide direct feeds frominstruments or other sources is byusing an Active DI box utilisingan input amplifier driving anoutput transformer.

The AR-133 fulfills all therequirements of an active DI andmore.
